The two minutes inside are the same on every boat. The differences lie around them: where you board, how long you ride, what kind of craft, and whether the listing actually says it enters. Everything here comes from the listing in question.

What you are really booking

Two minutes under the hole. The rest is the coast.

Since 13 August 2024 the Capitania do Porto de Portimão decides how Benagil cave is visited. Its notice, Edital 019/2024, amended in July 2025, lets licensed motor boats hold inside for two minutes and guided kayak or SUP groups stay for up to eight. Boats use the western opening, paddle craft the eastern one, in single file. Up to five boats and fourteen paddle craft may be inside at once. Nobody lands on the sand. Nobody swims in. Life jackets stay on for the whole visit.

What GetYourGuide sells, then, is never the cave on its own. It is the hour or two around those minutes: the cliffs between Carvoeiro and Marinha, the lighthouse, a swim stop outside the caves, a search for dolphins off Albufeira or Lagos, the sunset on the way back to Portimão. The nearer you board, the shorter the trip; the longer the trip, the more coast you are paying for. If the view is enough, the fenced clifftop above the skylight costs nothing.

The longest anyone may stay inside: a guided paddle group, up to six kayaks per guide, in by the eastern opening and out the same way.

Benagil beach, Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra are within sight of the cave: one hour to ninety minutes, most of it in front of the cliffs.

02

Or ride for it

Portimão, Albufeira and Lagos add the journey along the coast, and two of them a dolphin search the listings do not guarantee.

03

Paddle in

The kayak tour is the one product in which you are the engine: ages 6 to 75, a guide ahead, up to eight minutes inside.

04

Marinha and back

Most routes continue to the arches of Praia da Marinha, and some add a swim stop outside the caves when the sea is calm. Then the ride home, into the sunset on the Portimão option.

Plan your visit

How to plan your visit

Booking, getting there, who can come and what to bring.

  • Pick the town, then the craft: board where you are staying, or drive to Benagil, Carvoeiro or Armação de Pêra for the short trips.
  • Early slots: the cave is busiest between late morning and mid-afternoon in summer; first departures have fewer boats and kayaks inside.
  • Free cancellation: every listing on this page allows it up to 24 hours before; weather cancellations by the operator are rebooked or refunded under the listing's terms.
  • Nothing to print: GetYourGuide issues a mobile ticket; show it at the booth or car park named in the listing.
  • By car: about 25 km from Albufeira and 33 km from Lagos, 11 km from Ferragudo. Benagil's clifftop car park is small and fills by mid-morning in summer; Praia da Marinha has a larger free lot that also fills.
  • By bus: VAMUS line 107 from Portimão stops at Praia do Carvalho, a few times a day; from Lagos or Albufeira change at Lagoa. Check the timetable, the service is thin.
  • From Faro airport: roughly 55 minutes by car to Benagil.
  • On foot: the Seven Hanging Valleys trail passes above the cave between Vale Centeanes and Praia da Marinha, about 5.7 km one way.
  • Children: the Armação de Pêra listing welcomes small children; the kayak tour takes ages 6 to 75; the Faro land tour is for ages 16 to 80; the Lagos boat excludes babies under one.
  • Pregnancy: the Portimão, Albufeira and Lagos listings exclude pregnant women; the Armação listing says pregnant guests are welcome on its calm hour.
  • Mobility: the Lagos listing is tagged wheelchair accessible; the RIBs and small boats are not, and the kayak tour excludes back problems and guests over 100 kg.
  • Everyone: life jackets for the whole visit, by law; helmets near rockfall-risk cliffs where the operator provides them.
  • Swimwear under light clothes and a towel, for the swim stops that happen outside the caves.
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; a windproof layer for the ride back on the speedboats.
  • Water shoes or sandals for the kayak launch and for wet feet boarding at Armação de Pêra.
  • Only a small bag: the Portimão listings do not allow luggage or large bags on board, and the kayak base stores belongings.

What else to know

The best time, small tricks, what lies nearby and the fine print.

  • Season: late May to September for calm seas and daily departures; October still works on most days; November to March is calm-day-only.
  • Light: the sun reaches the sand through the skylight around late morning in summer, which is also when the cave is busiest.
  • Early or late: first departures have fewer craft inside; the Portimão and Armação listings offer sunset trips.
  • Rain: December is the wettest month at Faro in the IPMA normals and July the driest; summer rain is rare.
  • Drive to Benagil before nine in summer or park at Praia da Marinha and walk the cliff path.
  • Book the boat in the town you sleep in if you have no car; the ride is part of the trip anyway.
  • Kayak tours are cancelled first when a swell builds; keep a boat as a fallback on a windy forecast.
  • Photos of people standing on the beach inside are from before August 2024. Do not expect that shot.
  • The cave is Portuguese: roughly beh-nah-ZHEEL, stress on the last syllable.
  • Praia da Marinha: the arches and sea stacks next door, 30 minutes on foot along the cliff from Benagil.
  • Algar Seco: the rock formations and boardwalk at Carvoeiro, on the Carvoeiro and Faro routes.
  • Praia do Carvalho: the beach reached through a tunnel, passed by the Benagil and Carvoeiro boats.
  • Alfanzina lighthouse: on the clifftop between Carvoeiro and Benagil, seen from the trail and from the water.
  • The harbour master bars access when visibility is under 1,000 metres and between sunset and sunrise; operators cancel in rough seas and rebook or refund under their listing terms.
  • Landing inside, swimming in, floating aids, unguided paddle rentals, diving and fishing in the cave area are prohibited; operators face fines for breaches.
  • The Albufeira listing charges most of the price to reschedule a no-show; the Portimão listings charge for a destroyed life jacket.
  • Every listing here: free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

The guide

Benagil cave, explained

Search for Benagil cave and you find two things: photographs of people standing on a beach under a hole in the rock, and a long list of boat trips with the same photograph on the cover. The first is history. The second is for sale. What the photographs do not show is the notice that now governs the cave, and that notice is the key to reading the tours.

A hole in the roof

The cave sits in the Miocene limestone of the Lagoa coast, between Carvoeiro to the west and Armação de Pêra to the east, a few hundred metres from the tiny cove of Praia de Benagil. Of the sea caves between Lagos and Albufeira it is the one that was eroded both from the side, by the Atlantic, and from the top, by rainwater working through the karst, until part of the roof fell in. The result is a round skylight above a crescent of sand, lit from above around late morning in summer. Locals call the opening the eye, o olho; the word algar means a sinkhole. The rock is roughly twenty million years old. The cave itself has no dated age, and nobody serious gives one.

Inside Benagil cave looking up at the round skylight in the domed roof, sunlight falling on the sand and turquoise water
The skylight: a roof collapse in Miocene limestone, lit from above around late morning.

What the notice changed

The cave went viral in the early 2010s and the summers that followed brought swimmers stranded inside, kayaks, paddleboards and boats crossing paths in a confined space, and rescues. After the 2023 season the harbour master of Portimão restricted access with an interim notice. A government working group led by CCDR Algarve then set a carrying capacity, and on 30 July 2024 the Capitania signed Edital 019/2024, in force from 13 August. Landing on the inside beach, swimming in, floating aids and unguided paddle rentals were banned; motor boats were given two minutes inside and paddle groups eight; boats took the western opening and kayaks the eastern one. The July 2025 amendment raised the caps to five boats and fourteen paddle craft at once. In June 2025 the Algarve tourism board said the incidents of too many boats inside, and of boats crossing paths with kayaks and swimmers, had stopped.

The honest small print: no tour can promise you the inside of the cave. Every boat listing on this page enters only when the sea allows, at the skipper's and the maritime authorities' discretion, and the notice itself bars access in poor visibility and after sunset. Book with free cancellation and check the forecast.

Reading the tours

Once you know the inside is two minutes, the catalogue makes sense. The boat from Benagil beach and the boat from Armação de Pêra take an hour because they start next door. Carvoeiro takes ninety minutes for the same reason plus the arches of Marinha. Portimão adds Ferragudo and the ride; Albufeira and Lagos add the open sea and a search for dolphins that their listings do not guarantee. The kayak tour is the only one in which you do the work, and the only one that uses the eastern opening. The Faro product is not a boat at all: it drives you to the top of the cliff, lets you look down the hole, and walks you to Marinha. Its listing says so.

A line of colourful kayaks with paddlers in life jackets following a guide along the base of ochre cliffs
Paddle groups: six craft per guide, in by the eastern opening, no more than eight minutes inside.

Which option, for whom

Staying in Carvoeiro, Lagoa or Armação de Pêra with a car: take a short boat from the beach nearest you and spend the saved time on the cliff path. Staying in Portimão, Albufeira or Lagos without a car: board there and treat the ride as the trip. Travelling with small children or pregnant: the Armação listing is the one that says it welcomes you. Fit and keen: the kayak. Afraid of boats, or on a tight budget: walk to the fence and look down, then read our guide to the view from above. The rules themselves, point by point, are in the rules guide.

Praia da Marinha from the clifftop: golden sand, tall ochre cliffs and a double sea arch in turquoise water
Praia da Marinha: the arches most boat routes reach after the cave, and the far end of the cliff walk.

FAQ

Questions before the visit

Plain answers to what people ask most about Benagil cave.

Can you do Benagil caves without a tour?

Not from the water. Since August 2024 the cave is reserved for licensed boat tours and guided kayak or SUP groups; swimming in, floating in and unguided paddle rentals are prohibited by the harbour master of Portimão. From the land you can look down through the skylight from the fenced clifftop for free. The rules in full.

Can I swim in Benagil Cave?

No. Entering the cave by swimming or with any floating aid is banned under Edital 019/2024, and every boat listing on this page says passengers stay aboard inside the cave. Swim stops, where offered, happen outside the caves at the skipper's or guide's call.

Is it possible to walk into the Benagil Cave?

No. The cave sits under a cliff with no path down, and landing on the inside beach is prohibited for everyone. What you can do on foot is walk from Praia de Benagil east along the cliff to the fenced hole in roughly 5 to 10 minutes and look down. How to see the cave from above.

How long is the Benagil Cave tour?

The listings on this page run from one hour (Benagil beach and Armação de Pêra) to two and a half hours (Albufeira and Lagos). Inside the cave itself a motor boat may stay two minutes and a kayak group up to eight; the rest of the trip is the coastline. Which tour fits which day.

Is the Benagil Cave closed?

No. It is open and regulated. On a given day the sea decides: the notice bars access when visibility is under 1,000 metres and between sunset and sunrise, operators do not run in rough water, and kayak tours are the first to be cancelled when a swell builds.

How do I get to Benagil sea cave?

By road Benagil is about 25 km from Albufeira and about 33 km from Lagos; the clifftop car park is small and fills by mid-morning in summer. Bus 107 from Portimão stops at Praia do Carvalho nearby but runs only a few times a day. Most visitors drive, or board a boat in the town they are staying in. Getting there, in detail.

Can I kayak to Benagil Cave?

Yes, with a guide. Guided kayak and SUP groups enter by the eastern opening in single file, up to six craft per guide and up to eight minutes inside. Renting a kayak and paddling in on your own is not allowed in the regulated zone, whatever a rental listing suggests.

When is the best time to visit Benagil Cave?

Late May to September for calm seas, and the first departures of the day for fewer craft inside. The sun reaches the sand through the skylight around late morning in summer. November to March is quieter and tours run on calm days only. Month by month.

What should I wear on a Benagil cave tour?

Swimwear under light clothes, a towel, a hat, sunscreen and a windproof layer for the ride back; the Lagos listing suggests warm clothing and a jacket. Life jackets are compulsory for the whole visit and the operators provide them. Leave large bags behind; the Portimão listings do not allow them on board.

What is special about Benagil caves?

Of the sea caves between Lagos and Albufeira, Benagil is the one eroded from the side and from the top, so a round hole in the roof lights a small beach inside. The rock is Miocene limestone roughly twenty million years old; the cave itself has no dated age. The facts, checked.

Are the dolphin tours worth combining with the cave?

If you want the open sea as well as the cliffs, yes: the Albufeira and Lagos trips spend part of their two and a half hours searching for wild dolphins, with biologists aboard on the Lagos boat. Both listings say sightings are not guaranteed, and the cave minutes are the same as on a short trip.

Which tour should I book with children or limited mobility?

The Armação de Pêra listing says it suits all ages including small children and pregnant guests; the Albufeira catamaran has a toilet and a bar; the Lagos listing is tagged wheelchair accessible. The Portimão RIBs and the kayak tour exclude back problems, and the kayak tour takes ages 6 to 75.
