Benagil cave sits between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra on the Lagoa coast. Boats reach it from Benagil beach itself, from Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra within sight of it, and from Portimão, Albufeira and Lagos further along the coast. Kayak groups launch from Praia de Benagil, a short paddle away. Two further products reach the cave by land and look down through the skylight.
The law frames the whole choice. Under Edital 019/2024 and its 2025 amendment, a motor boat may stay inside for two minutes and a guided paddle group for eight. Each boat tour therefore sells the coastline around that short visit: an hour to two and a half hours of cliffs, arches, beaches and sometimes dolphins. Pick the tour for the ride, not for the cave, and you will choose well.
The short answer
For the shortest route to the cave, book the small-group boat from Benagil beach or the Carvoeiro boat trip, both within sight of the cave and 1 to 1.5 hours according to their listings. For the longest look inside, book the guided kayak tour, which may stay up to eight minutes under the edital. Staying in Portimão, Albufeira or Lagos, take the departure from your own town and treat the ride and the dolphin search as the product. Prefer dry land? The Faro day trip and the Seven Hanging Valleys walk show you the skylight from above.

What is the best way to see the Benagil caves?
From the water on a licensed small boat if you want the classic view in little time, by guided kayak if you want the longest stay inside, and from the clifftop if you want it free. The law allows no other way in.
Three routes exist. A licensed motor boat takes you in through the western opening and holds for two minutes while you look up at the hole. A guided kayak or SUP group paddles in by the eastern opening in single file and may stay up to eight minutes. On foot, you stand behind the fence on the clifftop and look down through the skylight. Swimming in, landing on the sand and unguided paddling are prohibited; our guide to the Benagil cave rules sets out the edital in detail.
Our pick for most visitors is a small boat from a nearby port. The cave is one stop among many: the Benagil boat's listing counts 15 to 20 caves on its one-hour route, the Armação de Pêra listing about 10 caves and 15 wild beaches, the Carvoeiro listing Algar Seco, Vale Covo, Praia do Carvalho, the Alfanzina lighthouse and the arches of Praia da Marinha. You spend the hour looking at a coast most people see from above, and the two minutes inside are the finale.
If being inside the cave is the point of your trip, paddle. Nothing else gets you eight minutes.

Boat or kayak for Benagil cave?
Kayak for time inside and effort, boat for distance, comfort and a seat for the whole family. Kayak tours are the first to be cancelled when the swell rises.
The kayak is the one product where you are the engine. The guided kayak tour from Benagil runs 2 hours according to its listing, in two and three seat kayaks with up to 12 people per guide, and includes a certified local guide, life jacket, waterproof bags and seats with back support. The listing takes ages 6 to 75, excludes anyone over 100 kg and anyone with back problems or mobility impairments, and asks you to arrive 30 minutes early for the safety briefing, 45 to 60 minutes early in high season to find parking. Its itinerary lists a guided stop of about 10 minutes at the cave; the edital caps time inside the cave at eight.
A boat asks nothing of you. The Benagil, Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra departures are 1 to 1.5 hours by their listings, cover more coast than a paddle can, and carry small children (the Armação listing says it welcomes small children and pregnant guests, while the RIB listings exclude pregnant women and people with back or heart problems). Boats also run on days a kayak cannot.
The deciding question is the sea. A moderate swell cancels kayaks first, then the boats. In the calm months from May to September the odds favour you either way; outside them, a boat is the safer booking.

Four times longer inside the cave than any motor boat: the guided kayak tour's listing states 2 hours, ages 6 to 75 and a swim break at Praia da Marinha.
Book thisWhich boat tour goes inside the cave?
The Benagil, Carvoeiro, Armação de Pêra and Portimão listings each say the boat enters the cave when the sea allows. The Lagos listing says it enters when conditions are safe. The Albufeira listing does not state that its boats enter.
Each listing adds the same condition: the skipper decides on the day, with the maritime authority's rules in force. The Portimão listing puts it as entering the caves only when sea conditions allow, at the skipper's and the authorities' discretion. The Benagil listing says the cave visit depends on sea conditions. The Lagos listing says the boat enters the caves only when conditions are suitable and safe. None promises the inside.
Size matters too. The 2024 edital set the capacity as 3 boats under 12 metres or 1 boat over 12 metres, and in practice the boats that go in are small: RIBs, the Benagil boat with a maximum of 10 people, the Carvoeiro boat with two crew. The Albufeira tour offers a choice between an 18-person RIB and a 100-person catamaran with toilet and bar. The listing does not state that either boat enters the Benagil cave. It describes cave visits that depend on sea conditions and the maritime authorities, and sells the coastline, the swim stops and the dolphin search. Read it that way.
The table below puts the nine products side by side. Where a listing does not say something, the cell says so.
| Tour | Leaves from | Listing length | Craft | Enters the cave? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portimão RIB tour, sunset option | Portimão riverside | 1.5 hours | RIB speedboat | Yes, when the sea allows |
| Benagil small-group boat | Benagil beach | 1 hour | Small boat, max 10 people | Yes, when the sea allows |
| Guided kayak tour | Benagil, O Litoral car park | 2 hours | Two and three seat kayaks | Yes, paddled in |
| Carvoeiro boat trip | Carvoeiro beach square | 1.5 hours | Small boat, two crew | Yes, the listing says so |
| Armação de Pêra boat tour | Praia dos Pescadores | 1 hour | Not stated | Yes, as the final stop |
| Albufeira caves and dolphins | Albufeira marina | 2.5 hours | Catamaran or RIB | Not stated |
| Lagos dolphins and Benagil combo | Marina de Lagos | 2.5 hours | Speedboat with hydrojets | When conditions are safe |
| Faro day trip | Faro Marina | 5 hours | Minibus, land tour | No, seen from above |
| Seven Hanging Valleys walk | Praia da Marinha | 2 hours | On foot | No, skylight from above |
How long is the Benagil cave tour?
One hour from Benagil or Armação de Pêra, 1.5 hours from Carvoeiro or Portimão, 2.5 hours from Albufeira or Lagos, according to the listings. The time inside the cave is two minutes by law on each of them.
Duration follows distance. The three departures within sight of the cave spend their hour on caves and beaches between Carvoeiro and Marinha. The Portimão RIB's listing states 1.5 hours and a route past the Fort of Santa Catarina, Ferragudo and its castle, Carvoeiro and Algar Seco before the cave. The Albufeira and Lagos listings state 2.5 hours because the run along the coast is long and both add a dolphin search offshore.
The kayak listing states 2 hours for a route that covers far less water, because paddling is slow and the itinerary includes a stop at Praia da Marinha and a swim break. The Faro listing states 5 hours, most of it in a minibus and on foot, with about 30 minutes at the skylight and about 1.5 hours of free time at Marinha.
Add the check-in. Listings ask for 20 to 30 minutes before departure, and the kayak operator asks for up to an hour in high season because of parking. The practicalities of reaching each port are in our guide to getting to Benagil cave.

The flagship from Portimão: the listing states 1.5 hours by RIB, a small-group or private option, a sunset departure, and a live guide in English, French, Portuguese or Spanish.
Book thisWhere do Benagil boat tours leave from?
Benagil beach, Carvoeiro, Armação de Pêra, Portimão, Albufeira and Lagos, with a kayak launch at Benagil and land tours from Faro and Praia da Marinha. Book the departure closest to where you sleep.
Here is each departure as the listing describes it.
- Benagil beach: the small-group coast boat tour departs from the sand, with check-in 30 minutes before at the operator's ticket shop in the village. One hour, up to 10 people.
- Carvoeiro: the Carvoeiro boat trip meets at the entrance of the beach square, left side, ticket booth number 1 with a dolphin on its roof. The listing states 1.5 hours.
- Armação de Pêra: the Armação de Pêra boat tour meets at Praia dos Pescadores by a black flag on the sand. One hour, Essential, Sunset or Private option, and you may get your feet wet boarding.
- Portimão: the flagship RIB tour meets in front of the São Francisco convent ruins on the riverside, at the end of the dirt road with the commercial port on your right. The listing states 1.5 hours.
- Albufeira: the caves and dolphins tour has separate meeting pins in the marina area for the RIB and the catamaran. The listing states 2.5 hours.
- Lagos: the dolphin and Benagil combo meets at Marina de Lagos, shop 10, under the Pizza Hut opposite marina gates A to D. The listing states 2.5 hours.
Benagil village has a small, partly paid clifftop car park that fills by mid-morning in summer. If you are driving to the Benagil boat or the kayak launch, arrive early or use Marinha's larger car park and walk. Staying in Portimão, Albufeira or Lagos, the honest advice is to board in your own town: the extra sea time is the product, and the cave minutes are identical.

Are the dolphin tours worth it?
Yes, if you are based in Albufeira or Lagos and want a half day at sea; no, if the cave is your purpose. Both listings say dolphin sightings are not guaranteed, and the cave minutes are the same as on a one-hour boat.
Two products pair Benagil with a dolphin search. The Lagos combo runs 2.5 hours by its listing on a speedboat with twin hydrojet propulsion and marine biologists on board, searching offshore before following the coast to the cave and back to Lagos marina. It includes a toilet on board, life jackets, helmets and windbreakers if needed, and the listing is tagged wheelchair accessible. The Albufeira tour also states 2.5 hours, with swimming stops when the sea allows and a choice between a RIB and a catamaran with toilet and bar.
The listings are candid: these are searches for wild animals and a sighting is not promised. The Portimão listing says the same about dolphins seen on its route. If a dolphin is the one thing you must see, no Benagil tour can sell you that certainty.
Our view: a dolphin tour is a sea day with a cave on the way. A one-hour boat from Benagil, Carvoeiro or Armação is a cave trip with a coast around it. Decide which day you want. Both are legitimate; neither gets you more than two minutes under the hole.

Marine biologists, a toilet on board and a wheelchair accessible tag: the Lagos combo's listing states 2.5 hours with a dolphin search before the coast to Benagil.
Book thisCan you see Benagil cave without a boat?
Yes, from above. The skylight is fenced on the clifftop a few minutes' walk east of Praia de Benagil, and two guided products take you there on foot: the Faro day trip and the Seven Hanging Valleys walk.
The view down through the hole costs nothing. From Praia de Benagil the cliff path reaches the fenced opening in 5 to 10 minutes and continues to Praia da Marinha in about 30. The longer Seven Hanging Valleys trail runs about 5.7 km one way from Praia de Vale Centeanes to Marinha, with the Alfanzina lighthouse and a large sinkhole along the way. Our guide to Benagil cave from above covers the route, the fence and the thin rock at the edges.
Two listings package that view. The Faro day trip is, in its own words, not a boat tour: a 5-hour minibus trip from Faro Marina to Algar Seco and the Boneca cave, about 30 minutes at the Benagil skylight, and about 1.5 hours at Praia da Marinha with an optional cliff walk between them. Its listing excludes under-16s, people with vertigo and over-80s, and asks for hiking shoes. The Seven Hanging Valleys walking tour starts at Praia da Marinha, lasts 2 hours by its listing, and spends 30 minutes at the skylight with a guide explaining the geology. Transport is not included and children over 6 are welcome with an adult.
Neither puts you inside the cave. For visitors without a sea day in their plans, or with a fear of small boats, the view from above is a fine substitute and the photo is the one most people recognise.

What is the best tour option for families or limited mobility?
For families with small children, the Armação de Pêra boat or the Albufeira catamaran by their listings; for wheelchair users, the Lagos combo, the one listing tagged accessible. Check each listing's exclusions before booking.
Listings differ sharply on who may board. The Armação de Pêra tour says it welcomes small children and pregnant guests, excludes wheelchair users, and warns of wet feet when boarding from the sand. The Albufeira listing recommends its catamaran for families and suggests mornings for older guests and children under 5; it excludes pregnant women, people with back problems and wheelchair users. The kayak tour takes ages 6 to 75. The Benagil boat's listing excludes mobility impairments, claustrophobia and people over 95.
Mobility is where the field narrows. The Portimão RIB, the Benagil boat, the Carvoeiro boat and the Armação boat each exclude wheelchair users in their listings, and the RIBs exclude back and heart problems because of the ride. The Lagos combo is tagged wheelchair accessible, has a toilet on board and excludes babies under 1. The Faro land tour and the walk both exclude mobility impairments because of steps and uneven ground.
Our picks: small children, Armação de Pêra for a one-hour trip from a beach; a wide age span in one group, the Albufeira catamaran for its toilet and bar on a 2.5-hour day; a wheelchair user, Lagos; teenagers who want to work for it, the kayak. Each listing states free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which leaves room to change your mind if the forecast turns. For calm-sea odds by month, see our guide to when to visit Benagil cave.
Families and sunset seekers: the Portimão listing offers a small-group or private RIB with a sunset departure that returns as the sky changes colour, 1.5 hours in total.
Book thisFrequently asked questions
Which Benagil tour spends the most time in the cave?
The guided kayak tour. The edital allows a paddle group up to eight minutes inside against two for a motor boat. The kayak listing states 2 hours in total with a stop at Praia da Marinha.
Is the Benagil boat tour from Portimão worth the longer ride?
Yes, if Portimão is your base: the listing states 1.5 hours past Ferragudo, Carvoeiro and Algar Seco before the cave, with a sunset option. The cave minutes are the same as from Benagil beach.
Do the boats always enter Benagil cave?
No. Each listing says entry depends on sea conditions and the skipper's decision under the maritime authority's rules. A moderate swell keeps boats out, and kayaks are cancelled first.
Does the Albufeira catamaran go inside the cave?
The listing does not state that the boat enters the Benagil cave. It describes cave visits that depend on sea conditions, swimming stops and a dolphin search. Book it as a coastal cruise.
